He and fellow actor Patricia Arquette are the parents of a baby girl named Harlow Olivia Calliope. Hanks claims to be a relative of James Hanks, one of several possible fathers of Nancy Hanks, mother of United States president Abraham Lincoln. Jane is divorced from Aysha Hauer, the daughter of actor Rutger Hauer. He was the youngest ever recipient of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award on June 12, 2002. In addition to his screen work, Jane has appeared several times on stage, and received strong critical reviews as Tom in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, and as Chris in Arthur Miller's All My Sons.
