She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award in 1993 for her work as a lesbian raising a young son in a CBS after-school special. Appearing less frequently in cinema, Leeves lent her voice to the animated film James and the Giant Peach (1996) and acted in the film Music of the Heart (1999). In 1992, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special for her work in A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story, in which she plays a divorcée who kills her ex-husband and his young lover. By the end of the series' run, Daphne had bewitched and married the character Niles Crane, while Leeves had received an Emmy Award nomination for her role, and had become the highest paid British actress in Hollywood. Since Family Ties has been canceled, Meredith has been directing and starring in TV movies. Leeves played the eccentric, new age and forthright Daphne Moon, and she became a popular actress in this role. The second role she is well-known for is ex-flower child Elyse Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties, which aired from 1982 to 1989. In 1993, she joined the cast of the television series Frasier.

She received two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, in 1977 and 1978. Leeves also appeared in two episodes of Seinfeld - The Virgin and The Contest. She first became popular in Hollywood playing the role of Nancy Lawrence Maitland on the television drama Family, from 1976 to 1980. She had a recurring role in the television series Murphy Brown which provided her first period of success, playing the loud and awkward girlfriend of producer Miles Silverberg, Audrey. She is best known for her work on two television shows. She became somewhat visible as the flighty roommate on the syndicated sitcom Throb!. From that date until their divorce in 1989, she was credited as Meredith Baxter-Birney. She was a regular on The Benny Hill Show and appeared in a David Lee Roth music video for the song "California Girls", but struggled for several years to establish herself.

After the show was canceled, the couple became engaged and were married in 1974. Born in Ilford, England, Leeves trained as a ballet dancer and worked as a model, until she made her first film appearance in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. She was married three times, most notably to actor David Birney, whom she met on the set of the sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie; she played his wife on the series.
