Mary Martin

Mary Martin (December 1, 1913 - November 3, 1990) was an American star of (mainly stage) musicals. Amongst the roles originally created by her were those of Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Maria in The Sound of Music.

In 1929, she married Ben Hagman. Their son is actor Larry Hagman, who once appeared with his mother in South Pacific, as a member of the chorus. They were divorced in 1936.

Kennedy Center Honors (1989). Her television work includes a production of Gypsy and her sitcom Bette. Peabody Award: "Valentine". Other films include Scenes From a Mall, For the Boys (for which she was again nominated for an Academy Award), Hocus Pocus, The First Wives Club, and The Stepford Wives. Autobiography: "My Heart Belongs," Morrow (1976). Her rendition of 1990's "From a Distance" also earned her a Grammy and is another of her most popular songs. Husband Richard Halliday dies, 1973. Midler sang several of the film's songs including "Wind Beneath My Wings," which became one of Midler's most popular hits, receiving multiple Grammy Awards.
