During the making of this film, he met Julia Cypher, an assistant director who would later become his wife. Recently he's been casted to play Marvin's voice in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. The first low budget film in which he starred in was called Trespasses. Although he has never married, he has been romantically linked to Rima Horton since their days at the Chelsea College of Art. Horton is a politician affiliated with the Labour Party. Though the role garnered him laud from critics, he has since found it difficult to find another leading role in a big-budget Hollywood film. He also "narrated" the song Bell on the album Tubular Bells II. Phillips' big break came with the starring role in 1987's La Bamba as doomed early rocker Ritchie Valens. He is an alumnus of University of Texas at Arlington. In recent years he has come to the attention of a younger audience through his appearances as the apparently-villainous Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies. Phillips worked as an assistant director and instructor at the University of Texas, where he also studied Drama and Film Technique, between 1983-1986. He plays mostly period roles in British movies, while on the Hollywood screen he is typecast as the over-the-top villain. He has Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese, Spanish, Scotch-Irish and eighth Cherokee Indian origins. He made a particular impression as the male lead in the 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and became known to television audiences playing the role of Mr Slope in the BBC's 1980s adaptation of Barchester Towers.
