Jack Albertson

He was cremated and his ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean. His first acting role was in 1983 in a British commercial for Pac-Man cereal. He was 74 years old. After being cast, 5 months later, having to lose most of his body fat he gained before the auditions, he weighed a total of 210-220 pounds (95 to 100 kg) of mostly muscle mass. Jack Albertson died on Wednesday, November 25th, 1981 at 1:30 in the afternoon. After wrapping up the movie, within six weeks he gained back the 59 pounds (27 kg) to audition for the lead in Batman Begins. He made one movie, My Body, My Child (1982) and one TV movie, Grandpa, Will You Run With Me? (1982) before his death that were released posthumously. Bale went from 180 to 121 pounds (82 to 55 kg) for The Machinist.

In 1978 he was diagnosed with colon cancer, but kept this information from the public so he could continue to act. His father married Gloria Steinem in 2000 but sadly died of brain lymphoma in 2003. He resided for years in a modest home in West Hollywood. On January 29, 2000 he married Sibi Blazic (Winona Ryder introduced them). Jack Albertson was married to Wallace (Wally) Thompson and had one daughter, Maura. His great-uncle Rex Bale was also an actor. (again, by no means an exhaustive list). He is active in several environmental and animal protection organizations including the Ark Trust, Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Foundation.

Besides vaudeville and burlesque, he appeared on the stage in many Broadway plays including High Button Shoes, Top Banana, The Cradle Will Rock, Make Mine Manhattan, Show Boat, Boy Meets Girl, Girl Crazy, Meet the People, The Sunshine Boys (for which he received a Tony nomination for Best Actor), and The Subject was Roses (for which he won a Tony for Best Supporting Actor). After this he drew further attention when he won the much-coveted role of Laurie in Little Women, having been hand-picked for the role by Winona Ryder (who was set to play Jo in the film). Jack soon worked in burlesque as a hoofer (soft shoe dancer) and straight man to Phil Silvers on the Minsky's Burlesque Circuit. For this role and his role in the 1993 film Swing Kids Christian trained for 10 weeks in dancing and martial arts. His first real job in show business was with a vaudeville road troupe, the Dancing Verselle Sisters. However, he continued acting, next appearing in Henry V and TV roles before taking on several movie projects in row starting in 1992 with the Disney musical Newsies. In the summer he would sleep in Central Park (This was in the age before the muggers took over the park at night). The new-found celebrity status brought some trouble for the 13-year-old.

He was too poor to get a room in a flop house, so in the winter he would sleep on the IRT subway for a nickel and hide out when the transit workers would clear out the train at the end of the line. His "big break" came in 1987 when he was picked for the role of Jim in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. Jack dropped out of high school and traveled to New York City in an attempt make it big in show business. He began his acting career by appearing in a Pac-man cereal commercial in England in at age 9 and then appeared a year later in the West End play The Nerd.
