A vocal leftist, Asner served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild, where he controversially opposed U.S. policy in Central America until he was ousted and succeeded by Charlton Heston. He worked for his Father's welding firm before becoming an actor. He made his acting debut in 1983 in theatre at Watermill Theatre in Newbury, Berkshire, England as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet.
