David Gates
David Gates (born December 11, 1940) is a singer and songwriter, best known as the front man of the group, Bread (formed in 1967). Gates was born in Oklahoma, dropped out of college and married young, and set off for California to begin a career in music. Success came early, but it was with Bread that he gained a wide following and a string of hits including:
After Bread split up, he composed the theme song for the Oscar-winning film, The Goodbye Girl. Gates' distinctive singing voice and boy-next-door good looks helped ensure his popularity. However, many of his songs have been successfully covered by other artists, including "If" (a huge hit for Telly Savalas) and "Everything I Own" (covered by, among others, Boy George). In 2001 Andy Cato collaborated with Rachel Foster, producing the single "Pursuit Of Happiness" under the name Weekend Players. Having spent several years out of music altogether, Gates returned to the spotlight in the 1990s, and is still writing and performing. Groove Armada have never had a US Top 40 hit. However, many of his songs have been successfully covered by other artists, including "If" (a huge hit for Telly Savalas) and "Everything I Own" (covered by, among others, Boy George). However, they have also produced less mainstream work. Gates' distinctive singing voice and boy-next-door good looks helped ensure his popularity. Their most famous work is their 2000 international hit "I See You Baby", remixed by Fatboy Slim in the Big Beat style, with the repeated chorus line "Shakin' that ass", as heard in Renault Mégane advertisements. Less than a year later Groove Armada produced Lovebox in 2002, which included a variety of genres. In 2001 Goodbye Country, Hello Nightclub was released, with the title suggesting that their new album is more upbeat and less chill out - as demonstrated by the single "Superstylin'". This album includes "At The River", which was re-released as a single. In 1999 Groove Armada released Vertigo, which had a more mainstream and more 'polished' sound. Groove Armada's debut album was Northern Star, released in 1998. |
