During the later part of his life he suffered from emphysema and lung cancer. He shot to stardom in his two successive roles as a paranoid lover in Baazigar (1992) and Darr (1993). After the war, he became a stage actor, branching into television and films in the late 1940s. He first entered the limelight with his role as 'Abhimanyu' in the tele-serial Fauji (Soldier).
