Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper (born Vincent Damon Furnier, February 4, 1948), is a heavy metal singer and musician. He is best known for his stage performances, which are often theatrical and violent, utilizing make-up, electric chairs, guillotines, decapitated human heads, fake blood, and boa constrictors.

Alice Cooper was originally just the name of Furnier's band. Furnier officially changed his own name to Alice Cooper for a successful solo career.

Furnier, of French ancestry, born in Detroit and heavily influenced by The Beatles, formed a number of rock bands in the 1960s, including the Earwigs, The Spiders, and The Nazz. Furnier, upon learning that Todd Rundgren also had a band called the Nazz, changed the band's name to Alice Cooper, which at that time included guitarist Mike Bruce, guitarist Glen Buxton, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith. After moving to California in 1968, the band enlisted Shep Gordon as their manager, and the band was soon signed to Frank Zappa's label, Straight Records - releasing two competent but outlandish albums, Pretties For You and Easy Action, to a frosty public and critical reception.

Although the band incorporated theatrics in their stage act from the outset, a chance case of press misreporting an unfortunate, unrehearsed stage routine involving Alice and a live chicken led to the band changing tack - capitalising on tabloid sensationalism and creating a new sub-genre, Shock Rock.

1970s

In 1970, the band teamed up with fledgling producer Bob Ezrin on their album etitled Love it to Death. This was the first of more than 10 Alice Cooper group and solo albums done with Ezrin who is credited with having helped to create their definitive sound. A hit single soon followed in 1971's "I'm Eighteen". The band's mix of shock and glam captured a teen audience bored with bearded, denim-clad hippy bands and in the summer of 1972, Alice Cooper served up School's Out to their hungry audience, their biggest success. The album reached number two on the charts and sold over a million copies. The title song went Top 10 in the US and a number one single in the UK.

Album cover for Billion Dollar Babies.

Billion Dollar Babies, released in 1973, was the band's most commercially successful album, reaching no. 1 in both the US and Britain. That album's first single, "No More Mr. Nice Guy," became a Top 10 hit in Britain, and reached number 25 in the U.S. With a string of successful concept albums in the bag, the band toured the world - attempts to ban their shocking act by politicians and pressure groups only serving to fuel the myth of Alice Cooper and generate more audience interest.

In 1975, the band split - Cooper himself wanting to retain the theatrics that had brought them so much attention, the rest of the group wanting to concentrate on the music which had given them credibility.

His first solo album was Welcome to my Nightmare. He was backed by Lou Reed's band, guitarist Dick Wagner, guitarist Steve Hunter, bassist Prakash John, keyboardist Joseph Chrowski, and drummer Penti Glan. The album was another top 10 hit for Cooper. The album featured the song and feminist anthem, "Only Women Bleed", but without the old band this album marked out the direction Alice would now take - a move toward rock's mainstream.

After three further disappointing albums, in 1977 Cooper was hospitalized in a New York sanitarium for alcoholism. This may be responsible for a surprise return to form on the hard-rocking, semi-autobiographical album From The Inside. The life changing event also led Cooper, whose father was a preacher, to become a Christian. Around this time Cooper led celebrities in raising money to remodel the famous Hollywood sign in California. Cooper himself chipped in over $27,000 for the project, doing it in memory of friend and comedian Groucho Marx.

1980s

His albums from the beginning of 1980s, Flush The Fashion, Special Forces, Zipper Catches Skin, and DaDa, were not commercially successful. They were very strange and bizarre at that time, and are now considered cult classics. Cooper then released Constrictor (1986) which had more, but still very limited, success, followed by Raise Your Fist And Yell (1987). Both Constrictor and Raise Your Fist and Yell were recorded with guitarist Kane Roberts & bassist Kip Winger, both of whom would leave the band by the end of 1987. Kane Roberts would go on as a solo artist, while Kip Formed Winger.

In 1989 he released the Desmond Child-produced Trash with the hit singles "Poison", "Bed Of Nails" and "House Of Fire".

1990s

In 1991, the album Hey Stoopid was released, and the song with same name became an anti-drug anthem. In 1992, he made a famous cameo in the movie Wayne's World, in which he discusses the history of Milwaukee in some depth. In 1994 he released The Last Temptation, which contains deeper theological thoughts.

2000s

A pause, lasting for six years, ended in 2000 with Brutal Planet. Brutal Planet is strong, dark and loud with motives from brutality of a real world without much philosophy. It was succeeded by Dragontown in 2001, which has been described by Cooper as being "the worst town on Brutal Planet".

Frankly, these were not much good.

2003 saw the release of The Eyes of Alice Cooper which featured his recent touring band.

Cooper received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. It is located at the corner of Orange Drive and Hollywood Boulevard.

Cooper continues to record and tour heavily as of January 2005.

Cooper owns a rock and roll club called Cooperstown in Arizona and Cleveland, Ohio. Cooper is also an avid golfer and also has a popular syndicated radio show called "Nights with Alice Cooper" where classic rock and roll songs are showcased.

Cooper has still not been inducted - on balance, unjustifiably, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Quotes

On Anti-War Music and Artist that oppose George W. Bush "To me, that's treason. I call it treason against rock 'n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics. When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick. If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal. I think we all should support a great guy like Bush and Rock Star should back him up."

On Marilyn Manson "He has a woman's name and wears makeup. How original"-Alice Cooper. "Look Marilyn Manson is a New School Alice Cooper, he's out there to shock and give a good show, and that's what we were all about"-Alice Cooper, an interview on MTV.

"Drinking bear is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a Christian, that's a tough call. That's rebellion."

"Somebody threw a Chicken On stage, and I come from Detroit i've never been on a farm in my life, so I think well it's a chicken it has wings it'll fly, so I pick up and threw back to the audience thinking it'll fly in the sun set. The Audience tore it to pieces and threw back all the parts on stage, and the next day the paper goes Alice Cooper bites the head off chicken and drinks the blood and all that, I get a call from Frank Zappa asking Did you really do this? and I go No, then he's like Well don't tell anyone because they love it."-Alice Cooper,The History of Rock N Roll

On Anti-War Music and Artist that oppose George W. Deftones members have worked on several side projects, including Moreno's Team Sleep and Cunningam's Phallucy. Guitarist Carpenter also works with a group called Kush who feature members from Fear Factory and Cypress Hill. Malmsteen, Mötley Crüe, Melvins, Tool, UFO, W.A.S.P., Michael Jackson, Megadeth, and of course Marilyn Manson, who has been called an imitation of Cooper. Early track titles include "Buffalo" and "Diamond.". Many artists and rock bands claim to be fans of Cooper's, including KISS, Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Alice In Chains, U2, Guttermouth, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Yngwie J. The band have a new album, possibly titled "Saturday Night Wrist" scheduled for release in Spring 2005. Cooper has still not been inducted - on balance, unjustifiably, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Erlewine is slightly bothered, however, noting that "Deftones feel compelled to strengthen their metallic roots" by forsaking "the very things that make them better and more interesting than the rest — namely, their love of art rock, whether it's via the Cure or My Bloody Valentine." He closes by writing, "When they do play by the rules, they're good, but they're great when they don't follow a map.".

Cooper is also an avid golfer and also has a popular syndicated radio show called "Nights with Alice Cooper" where classic rock and roll songs are showcased. In reviewing Deftones Stephen Thomas Erlewine writes that "Hexagram," the album's opener, " hits hard — harder than they ever have, revealing how mushy Staind is, or how toothless Linkin Park is, even if it's a bit of a shame that Chino Moreno has resorted to guttural barking for singing.". Cooper owns a rock and roll club called Cooperstown in Arizona and Cleveland, Ohio. Delgado plays synth, keyboards or sampler rather than his previous turntables. Cooper continues to record and tour heavily as of January 2005. Much of the material on the album was written by guitarist Carpenter, which accounts for the album's more heavy metal feel. It is located at the corner of Orange Drive and Hollywood Boulevard. Again, the album sold well, and "Minerva" received some radio play.

Cooper received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. Their fourth and latest album, Deftones, was released in 2003. 2003 saw the release of The Eyes of Alice Cooper which featured his recent touring band. An acoustic of Boy's Republic was to appear on Black Stallion, and part of it was leaked and spread through file sharing programs. Frankly, these were not much good. There was a possibility of a release of Black Stallion, a remix album of White Pony, but instead, a limited edition black and red version of White Pony was released with a bonus 13th track: The Boy's Republic. It was succeeded by Dragontown in 2001, which has been described by Cooper as being "the worst town on Brutal Planet". White Pony later went on to earn multi-platinum status as well as a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance.

Brutal Planet is strong, dark and loud with motives from brutality of a real world without much philosophy. Of White Pony, one review wrote, "Moreno is exquisitely mind-blowing, but his fear is also evident" and that "Deftones went soft, but in an impressive way, to twist around its signature punk-thrash sound." [2] (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:21o20r1au48n~T1). A pause, lasting for six years, ended in 2000 with Brutal Planet. A collaboration with singer Maynard James Keenan of Tool on "Passenger" is a highlight. In 1994 he released The Last Temptation, which contains deeper theological thoughts. ("Teenager" was originally a Team Sleep song.) "Knife Prty" features a stunning, Diamanda Galas-like vocal performance by Rodleen. In 1992, he made a famous cameo in the movie Wayne's World, in which he discusses the history of Milwaukee in some depth. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive, noting Moreno's increasing sophistication as a lyricist and singer, and the group's bold experimentalism: The fragile "Teenager", for example, incorporates elements of glitch and trip hop, with programming duties carried out by friend and Team Sleep bandmate, DJ Crook, aka, "Crookone".

In 1991, the album Hey Stoopid was released, and the song with same name became an anti-drug anthem. Delgado was now a full-time band member, and he added greatly to the atmospheric album. In 1989 he released the Desmond Child-produced Trash with the hit singles "Poison", "Bed Of Nails" and "House Of Fire". It is generally considered by fans to be Deftones' most mature recording. Kane Roberts would go on as a solo artist, while Kip Formed Winger. In 2000, the band's third album, White Pony, was released. Both Constrictor and Raise Your Fist and Yell were recorded with guitarist Kane Roberts & bassist Kip Winger, both of whom would leave the band by the end of 1987. This mellow version with a new trip-hop-esque beat by Delgado inspired vocalist Chino Moreno to expand on softer music, which eventually lead to his side project Team Sleep.

Cooper then released Constrictor (1986) which had more, but still very limited, success, followed by Raise Your Fist And Yell (1987). "Be Quiet And Drive" was performed acoustic with Incubus frontman Brandom Boyd and Adam Sandler for the "Little Nicky" soundtrack. They were very strange and bizarre at that time, and are now considered cult classics. Delgado again appeared on several songs, and demonstrated his deft, inventive touch at a time when turntable scratching was in danger of becoming a nu metal cliche. His albums from the beginning of 1980s, Flush The Fashion, Special Forces, Zipper Catches Skin, and DaDa, were not commercially successful. "My Own Summer" and "Be Quiet and Drive" were hits, the latter's music video earned significant play on MTV. Cooper himself chipped in over $27,000 for the project, doing it in memory of friend and comedian Groucho Marx. It also sold well, and included a collaboration with Max Cavalera of Sepultura on "Headup," a tribute to Max's late step-son Dana Wells.

Around this time Cooper led celebrities in raising money to remodel the famous Hollywood sign in California. Around The Fur was released in 1997. The life changing event also led Cooper, whose father was a preacher, to become a Christian. Though Deftones were only tangentially associated with nu metal, they feared the increasingly negative use of the term and separated themselves from other such groups, both professionally and aesthetically. This may be responsible for a surprise return to form on the hard-rocking, semi-autobiographical album From The Inside. This was due in part to the fact that Deftones were often lumped into the then-emerging genre of nu-metal. After three further disappointing albums, in 1977 Cooper was hospitalized in a New York sanitarium for alcoholism. About this time, Deftones stopped touring and collaborating with bands like Korn.

The album featured the song and feminist anthem, "Only Women Bleed", but without the old band this album marked out the direction Alice would now take - a move toward rock's mainstream. One review of '"Adrenaline" noted Cunningham's "surprisingly sophisticated drumming" and wrote that "Unlike many of their contemporaries, the Deftones are very controlled even in the midst of chaos." [1] (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:nr6m96hofep6~T1). The album was another top 10 hit for Cooper. Delgado was not yet a member, but he performed on several songs. He was backed by Lou Reed's band, guitarist Dick Wagner, guitarist Steve Hunter, bassist Prakash John, keyboardist Joseph Chrowski, and drummer Penti Glan. "Bored" was a minor hit. His first solo album was Welcome to my Nightmare. The album sold well, and earned mostly positive reviews.

In 1975, the band split - Cooper himself wanting to retain the theatrics that had brought them so much attention, the rest of the group wanting to concentrate on the music which had given them credibility. They signed to Maverick Records, which is owned by Madonna, in 1994 and released their debut album, Adrenaline, the following year. With a string of successful concept albums in the bag, the band toured the world - attempts to ban their shocking act by politicians and pressure groups only serving to fuel the myth of Alice Cooper and generate more audience interest. Deftones enjoyed the early sponsorship of local favorites Korn, with whom they shared a fan community drawn largely from skateboarders. Nice Guy," became a Top 10 hit in Britain, and reached number 25 in the U.S. Carpenter was struck by a drunk driver; this tragedy became a benefit when Carpenter received a large insurance settlement, and was able to buy some expensive, high-quality equipment for the band. 1 in both the US and Britain. That album's first single, "No More Mr. Cheng joined after their original bassist left.

Billion Dollar Babies, released in 1973, was the band's most commercially successful album, reaching no. The founding members of the band met while skateboarding, and their first rehearsals together took place in 1989-1990 while they were in high school; among their early songs was a cover of Danzig's "Twist Of Cain". The title song went Top 10 in the US and a number one single in the UK. Moreno has cited Morrissey, The Cure's Robert Smith and Depeche Mode's David Gahan among his favorite singers, and beyond an occasional similarity in vocal technique, these singers' sweeping sense of drama and delicate vulnerability is often evident in Moreno's vocals. The album reached number two on the charts and sold over a million copies. Moreno's poetic lyrics--described by a Time magazine critic as "furiously intelligent"--are often evocative, yet sparse enough to allow for multiple interpretations, and sometimes make startling use of wordplay. The band's mix of shock and glam captured a teen audience bored with bearded, denim-clad hippy bands and in the summer of 1972, Alice Cooper served up School's Out to their hungry audience, their biggest success. Deftones have often been praised as one of the more innovative and unique heavy metal bands of recent years.

A hit single soon followed in 1971's "I'm Eighteen". The band consists of Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), Chi Cheng (bass) and turntablist/keyboardist/sampler player Frank Delgado. This was the first of more than 10 Alice Cooper group and solo albums done with Ezrin who is credited with having helped to create their definitive sound. Deftones are a multi-platinum selling, Grammy award winning rock band from Sacramento, California. In 1970, the band teamed up with fledgling producer Bob Ezrin on their album etitled Love it to Death. possibly 'Saturday Night Wrist', (2005).
