Cleanup begins as new round of stoms develops

Cleanup has begun after severe storms moved through north Georgia Thursday morning.

Another round of storms is developing with potential impacts on the morning commute.

Here’s a look back at the storms as they unfolded.

1:07 p.m.

Gilmer County opens shelter for those who need it.

12:29 p.m.

Multiple roads and facilities in Dalton are currently closed due to flooding and storm damage.

12:22 p.m.

People in Gilmer County are asked to avoid driving as many roads have culverts that have washed away and other roads are flooded with standing water. Numerous other roads have trees down. The Sheriff’s Office said at least on a vehicle that as traveling. It’s unclear if anyone was hurt.

11:00 a.m.

A ground stop has been issued at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport until later this afternoon, according to FAA.

8:45 a.m.

Numerous roads are closed in Habersham County due to downed trees, power lines and flooding.

8:43 a.m.

A tree is down on top of a car on North Meadow Parkway in Roswell. No injuries have been reported.

8:25 a.m.

In Fannin County, all lanes are blocked on SR 60 N at Young Stone Dr. due to road debris.

8:22 a.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Barrow, Bank, Clarke, Hall, Jackson and Madison counties until 8:45 a.m.

8:00 a.m.

As the storms are moving through, a few counties have been dropped from the tornado watch.

7:53 a.m.

Flash Flood Warning for Habersham County until 10:15am Thursday.

7:44 a.m.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Paulding and Polk County until 8:30 a.m.

7:34 a.m.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Cherokee, Dawson, Forsyth, Gwinnett and Hall County until 8:15 a.m.

7:25 a.m.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Habersham and Rabun County until 8:15am.

Fannin County Schools:

“Due to hazardous weather this morning, buses are running late. All students drivers and those transporting in personal automobiles, please stay safe. Student tardies will not count this morning. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your student’s school. Faculty and staff, please communicate with your principals if you are having issues traveling.”

7:02 a.m.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Dawson, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Lumpkin and Pickens County until 7:45am.

7:00 a.m.

The Gilmer County Schools will now be closed today due to severe weather.

6:45 a.m.

Union County Schools will have virtual learning for some of their students on Thursday:

“As of 5:30 AM this morning, reports indicate that the Suches area has widespread power and phone outages. Woody Gap Schools will observe an online learning day today, Thursday, May 9th, 2024. Students should work on their online assignments or work packets as assigned. If you are dealing with power issues, your teachers will work with you. The Blairsville Campus will remain open and on a normal schedule. If you are impacted by power outages, downed trees, or flooded roads, your child’s school will excuse either a tardy or absence today. Please be sure to use extreme caution when commuting to school this morning.”

A new flash flood warning has been issued for Gilmer county and Murray County until 8:15 a.m.

A new tornado watch has been issued for all of north Georgia and metro Atlanta until 1 p.m.

5:44 a.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning extended until 6:15 a.m. for Oglethorpe County.

5:11 a.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Clarke and Oglethorpe counties until 6:00 a.m.

2,184 Georgia Power customers in Gilmer county are without power after storms moved through.

In Hall County, about 2,760 Georgia Power customers are without power.

For Georgia EMC, it is reporting 12,250 customers in north Georgia, 3,564 customers in northeast Georgia and 2,235 customers without power.

4:00 a.m.

A tornado watch for counties in the Channel 2 Action News viewing area has been allowed to expire.

3:55 a.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Madison and Oglethorpe counties until 4:30 a.m.

3:19 a.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is effect for Barrow, Clarke, Jackson and Oconee counties until 4:00 a.m.
