The US has reported 9 coronavirus deaths among more than 120 cases. Here's what we know about the US patients.

Nine coronavirus patients have died in Washington state.

The latest three deaths were announced Tuesday. Two of those patients died February 26, but their diagnoses weren't confirmed until Tuesday. They are now the earliest known coronavirus fatalities in the US.

In total, US has confirmed more than 120 cases of the coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, two months ago.

Forty-five of those cases are passengers who had been quarantined on the Diamond Princess cruise ship then repatriated. Three evacuees from Wuhan also tested positive for the coronavirus.

Sixteen states have reported cases, though in two of those states — Nebraska and Texas — the infections are only among repatriated citizens.

The coronavirus causes a respiratory disease known as COVID-19. More than 3,100 people have died and more than 92,000 others have been infected, about 87% of whom are in China. Cases have been recorded in at least 74 countries.

The US is seeing a rising number of cases of "community spread" — those patients had no known exposure to the virus or travel history to countries where outbreaks have been reported.

The first death — a man in his 50s who had chronic underlying health issues — was reported on Saturday at EvergreenHealth, a hospital in King County.

The three most recent deaths, all in King County, were announced Tuesday. Two of those patients died February 26, but officials did not confirm that they were infected with the coronavirus until after their deaths.

Washington has confirmed 27 cases of the virus in total, including the nine deaths. Several patients are residents of a nursing facility in King County.

At least seven of the deaths have been among residents of a long-term care facility called Life Care Center, where more than 50 residents and staff members have shown symptoms of the virus.

On Saturday, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency. The CDC said it may recommend canceling large public events in Washington state if the virus spreads further there.

California has confirmed at least 24 local cases since January 26. Many are in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Santa Clara County, part of the San Francisco Bay Area, has confirmed 11 cases so far.

Two other counties in the Bay Area — Alameda and Solano — reported two cases among healthcare workers at the NorthBay VacaValley Hospital on Sunday. Both workers were exposed to an infected patient in Solano County who was later moved to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. That patient, a woman, was the first reported case of "community spread" in the US.

Another resident of Alameda County — a person in Berkeley who traveled to an affected country — tested positive on Tuesday. The City of Berkeley said the person had mostly remained quarantined at home since their trip.

San Mateo County has confirmed two additional cases, and Sonoma County has confirmed one.

Outside the Bay Area, San Benito County has reported two cases and Los Angeles, Orange County, Humboldt County, and Placer County have reported one case each. The patient in Humboldt County was released from isolation after being cleared of infection.

The remaining cases in California were either passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship or evacuees from Wuhan.

Japanese authorities imposed a 14-day quarantine on the cruise ship after a person tested positive for the coronavirus, but at least 700 people wound up with COVID-19.

Two weeks ago, 328 Americans who were on the ship were flown back to the US. On the evacuation flight, 14 US citizens who'd tested positive for the virus flew in an isolation box, while others who'd been on the ship sat in a separate area. More than 30 additional people later got sick.

Infected passengers from the cruise ship were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska and to the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.

Passengers who tested negative were quarantined at two US military bases — the Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, and the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Many were released on Monday.

Oregon has reported three cases: two adults in Washington County and a casino worker in Umatilla County.

The patient is currently isolated in their Wake County home, Cooper said. North Carolina officials said the patient contracted the virus after visiting the Life Care Center in the Seattle area.

On Sunday, the CDC released an evacuee from Wuhan who had been quarantined in isolation at a medical facility in San Antonio, Texas. The patient was re-admitted hours later after one of their tests was "determined to be weakly positive."

The patient's first two tests had come back negative, which prompted the CDC to release them from quarantine. After the third test's positive results, CDC officials retrieved the patient and placed them back into medical isolation.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg called the incident "unacceptable."

The latest cases — a  husband and wife in their 70s — were reported on Monday. State health officials said both patients were doing well.

The first Chicago case, a woman in her 60s, traveled to Wuhan in December to care for her elderly father. She returned to Chicago on January 13, then infected her husband.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the woman had recently traveled to Iran, and added that she is "not in serious condition and has been in a controlled situation since arriving to New York."

Cuomo confirmed the second New York case on Tuesday: a 50-year-old male attorney from Westchester who works in Manhattan.

"We don't know how he commuted into Manhattan," Cuomo said in a Tuesday press conference.

The man was originally admitted to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, New York, then transferred to a New York City hospital. He is in serious condition.

At least three New York schools — SAR Academy and SAR High School in the Bronx and Westchester Day School in Mamaroneck — closed temporarily on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the New York Police Department declared a Level 1 mobilization — in which a task force from the borough is dispatched to a scene — in midtown Manhattan for a possible "coronavirus exposure."

Officials from the Madison and Dane County public health department said the patient was tested for the virus every other day for two weeks. After the last two tests came back negative, the patient was cleared to resume normal activities.

Massachusetts reported two cases: a man who'd returned from Wuhan and a woman in her 20s who had recently traveled to Italy.

The man is in his 20s and lives in Boston. He sought medical care shortly after arriving in the US, and authorities monitored his contacts for symptoms.

Massachusetts confirmed the case on February 1.

The second case was identified on March 2 by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The department referred to the case as a "presumptive positive case of COVID-19," and the patient's sample was being sent to the CDC for confirmation.

The patient is a woman in her 20s who lives in Norfolk County. She recently traveled to Italy with a school group and is recovering at home.

"The risk to the public from COVID-19 remains low in Massachusetts," Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said.

Arizona confirmed that "a member of the Arizona State University community" was infected on January 26.

The coronavirus family is a large group of viruses that typically affect the respiratory tract. Coronaviruses can lead to illnesses such as the common cold, pneumonia, and SARS. A recent study from the Chinese Center for Disease Control found that around 80% of coronavirus cases in China have been mild.

The CDC recommends that all travelers frequently wash their hands with soap and water and scrub for at least 20 seconds. They should refrain from touching their eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
